The 10 Best Thermometers for Babies in 2022 – Reviews and Buyer’s Guide

Helps you in getting the accurate temperature of your baby.

Baby (6-9 months) with thermometer in mouthAs a parent, you know that when your baby has a day where they are out of sorts – that is fussing when they’re awake, tossing and turning, or frequently waking when they’re asleep. So it’s always a good idea to check if your bundle of joy has a fever.

Since fevers are a common symptom of a variety of illnesses that can plague babies and small children, checking for one never hurts.

This being said, there are dozens of thermometers on the market. Many of these are geared specifically for use on babies and small children. So, how do you decide which one to use? Are there any temperature-telling superstars on the store shelves? How do you decide on just one to try?

Those are the questions we’re here to help you out with. We’ve compiled a list of the 10 best thermometers for babies and included in-depth reviews to (hopefully) help make your decision easier.
Who needs a thermometer for babies?
Nurse Taking Crying Baby's Temperature With Digital ThermometerWhile you might be able to feel the fever of your baby just by touching the forehead, you still should have a thermometer to be able to read the accurate temperature.

A fever can be potentially quite serious so not just being aware of the fever is essential, but an accurate reading is essential as well.

An accurate reading will give you a clear idea about what you should do next. You should call the doctor and handle all the things by yourself.

If you have a toddler who is less than 3 months old and has a fever of 100 degrees F or higher then call a doctor right away. For babies who are older than 3 months, call the doctor if the reading is above 101 degrees F.

There are several types of baby thermometers available in the market. Ear and forehead thermometers, Axillary thermometers, Rectal thermometers, and Oral thermometers are a few of them, rectal being the most accurate and the most recommended one.

Most of the baby thermometers in the market are digital ones. In fact, 9 out of 10 baby thermometers on our list are digital.

A digital thermometer is quite different from a glass thermometer that has mercury at the end.

By the way, glass thermometers no longer use mercury since the consumption of mercury is very harmful. They now come with a substitute for mercury.

Coming back to how the digital thermometer works, they come with an electronic sensor at the end and a digital display on the other end to read out the temperature. These types of thermometers can be auxiliary, oral, or rectal.

How we picked and tested?
Measuring baby's temperature with contactless thermometer Difficult-to-read glass thermometers have become completely obsolete with the launch of digital thermometers.

Digital thermometers can be broadly classified into two types: One with the sensors and one with the metal end that has the mercury substitute inside.

Ones with the sensors are currently the most popular since they offer a lot of convenience as compared to ones with the metal end.

Talking about convenience you can use a digital sensor thermometer orally, by placing it in the armpit of the baby, placing it on the forehead or inside the ears, and also by lubricating it and placing it in the rectum.

Since the digital sensor thermometer sounded very promising to us, we have tried to add as many sensor thermometers as possible. In fact, 9 of the 10 baby thermometers that we have mentioned above here are the sensor ones. Also, all the thermometers are digital ones. Sorry glass thermometers! no place for you guys.

While deciding on what thermometers we were going to feature over here, we only wanted three basic things out of the thermometer, speed, accuracy, and easy-to-read digital reading.

Once we were sure of what we wanted, we started looking for the popular thermometer on sites like Amazon and Best Buy, and we also had a look at what other publications are recommending.

We finally had a list of 14 baby thermometers, and we picked the 10 best based on the build quality, brand, and flash notification system.

1. iProven DMT489 – Best Overall Baby Thermometer

Ear Thermometer with Forehead Function - Fever Thermometer for Kids - Temporal Thermometer - Digital Thermometer Medical - Approved Infant and Kids Thermometer - iProven DMT-489WG

iProven is a very trustable brand in the field of electronic medical equipment.

The iProven DMT489 is a popular ear and forehead thermometer that uses infrared technology as well as traditional temperature reading methods to obtain accurate readings and keep your family’s health in check.

It’s both easy to use and handle, as well as sleek in appearance, making it a household medical staple.

Specifications
  • Two reading modes.
  • Fever indicators.
  • Dual measurement options.
  • Suitable for all age groups.

Our In-Depth Review:

To start with, the iProven DMT489 looks similar to most other infrared thermometers on the market. There’s nothing all that special about its design or colors, but it does have an overall shape that is easy to hold, giving it practicality when in use.

Its button layout is straightforward to navigate, only featuring two large buttons that are on either side of the display screen. Each button is for one of the thermometer’s two functions: head or ear, and is labeled as such.

The thermometer was relatively easy to use and the instructions, although necessary to include, weren’t needed. We were able to navigate our way around the simple yet highly effective system without instruction, which we found to be a nice change.

We tried the thermometer in both head and ear mode, developing a preference for ear mod but not ruling out head mode. However, the head mode is best used for a general, indicative scan of the body’s temperature.

Ear mode should be used for an accurate result if head mode produces unfavorable results. In-ear mode, one must simply lift the ear and point the probe at the eardrum, hitting the “ear” button and waiting for the signal that the reading is done.

It’s similar in head mode, except that the device doesn’t go into anybody’s cavities and instead stays on the outside of the body. Unfortunately, there’s no option to turn off the beeping that the thermometer makes. This includes the programmed fever alarm that goes off should a fever be detected.

This being said, though, the color indicators that come up after reading are incredibly helpful. The LCD screen will flash red for fever or green if the temperature falls within a normal, healthy range. In addition, the display comes with a backlight that can be activated whenever it is needed to take a reading.

The readings can be taken in either Fahrenheit or Celsius- whichever suits your preferences. For accurate results, it’s recommended to acclimatize the device, keeping it in the same room as the one you’re taking the reading in for a few minutes before turning it on.

The thermometer has an internal memory system that can log and store 20 readings. This makes it easy to look back on previous readings in order to monitor the health of a loved one with an illness, allowing you to take the necessary steps to reduce any fevers that pop up.

If you need to take the thermometer anywhere, you’re in luck – it comes with a soft travel pouch that can be used for travel and for simply storing the device in a safe space. Thankfully, the iProven DMT489 runs on everyday batteries, using AA to operate.

When it comes to cleaning, the thermometer should not be submerged in water. It can, however, be carefully wiped with a damp cloth or alcohol wipe to sanitize the device and its parts. The carrying bag can be cleaned in the washer and dryer or hand-washed and hung to dry.

Pros

  • Uses standard batteries.
  • Includes a storage bag.
  • It could be used as an ear and forehead thermometer.
  • Two modes of use.

Cons

  • Lacks the option to mute.

Conclusion:

The iProven DMT489 is a solid device that can be trusted. It’s backed by science and a plethora of great reviews, providing accurate results every time. Although its beeping can be an annoyance, it’s a small price to pay for such a reliable device.

2. Vigorun Thermometer – With Smart Chip

【New Version】Vigorun Medical Forehead and Ear Thermometer, Digital Infrared Temporal Thermometer for Fever, Instant Accurate Reading for Baby Kids and Adults This Vigorun forehead thermometer is ideal for babies and small children.

It is recommended by medical professionals and has been backed by various clinical studies.

Its design is sleek and clean, while its performance meets the highest standards using updated technology.

This thermostat meter can be used for a number of purposes, making it a household staple.

Specifications
  • Instant readings.
  • Specific lights and auditory signals for fever.
  • Can record room temperatures too.
  • Suitable for all age groups.

Our In-Depth Review:

Starting with its appearance, the Vigorun forehead and ear thermometer have a modern, sleek appearance. It has a decent width to it, providing the hand plenty of space to grip and hold the device.

Its screen is the perfect size for reading – even at night with no glasses on. Making it even easier to read is an LCD backlight that gives off just the right amount of light but doesn’t hurt the eyes. Its large button is easy to locate and efficiently eliminates the risk of accidentally hitting the wrong button, as there is only one (this is fantastic for dads with large fingers).

In terms of performance, the thermometer works relatively well for what it’s designed for, which is no-nonsense temperature readings. It features a handy feature that allows temperatures to be read in either degree Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit, depending on your personal preference.

It gives off nearly instant readings that are given within 1-3 seconds. If you choose to, you can opt to shut the beeping sounds off, which we found to be especially handy when trying to take the temperature of a sleeping child.

It uses a highly efficient transducer and probe combination to provide accurate results, as well as smart chip technology to keep the thermometer working well.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this thermometer, though, is that it can be used in a number of ways. It can be used on the forehead or in the ear to read body temperature. Or, it can be used to test the temperature of bath water, food, or rooms in the home in what is called the “object model”.

To switch from forehead to ear mode, all that’s required is the simple addition or removal of the in-ear temperature piece – also called the “probe”-, which takes only a matter of seconds to do.

To help you monitor the temperature of anyone in your home, the thermometer is equipped with recall technology. This allows the internal memory to store up to 12 readings in its memory for later recall and to monitor the illness.

When there is a sign of a fever, the thermometer emits three sharp beeps as a warning. Additionally, temperatures are showcased not only by the visual numbers but also by corresponding beeps and lights of different colors and lengths.

The probe for in-ear readings can be easily cleaned using alcohol wipes in between uses. However, this was a pain for us, as we’re used to switching probe covers between family members. For cleaning the rest of the thermometer, it’s pretty standard -wipe with a damp cloth or alcohol wipe and avoid getting the body of the device wet.

Pros

  • Easy to read, LCD display with backlight.
  • Internal storage that can hold 12 readings.
  • Multi-purpose use.
  • Sound settings.

Cons

  • No additional probe covers.

Conclusion:

All in all, though, this thermometer is a solid contender for “best baby thermometer”. Its unique technological advances and easy-to-use design, give it a leg up on the competition. As we said, however, the lack of probe covers was kind of inconvenient, but the colored lights and beeps were a great addition.

3. Simplife Thermometer – With Optimized Calibration Technology

Baby Forehead Thermometer with Ear Function, Digital Medical Infrared Body Temporal Basal Thermometer for Fever, for Kids, Children, Adults, Infants, Toddlers This non-contact thermometer makes use of state-of-the-art technology and caters to children who dislike the feeling of having oral thermometer probes in their mouths.

It’s easy to use and gives accurate readings.

The design of the thermometer is very similar to other thermometers.

it can record up to 20 previous recorded temperatures.

Specifications
  • LCD display.
  • Color-changing fever detects technology.
  • Internal memory to store readings.
  • Distinct sound effects.

Our In-Depth Review:

The Simplife infrared forehead thermometer can be used on the forehead or in the ear, both of which offer accurate readings within seconds. Although, the ear reading method is recommended by Simplife for children younger than 6 months old, to obtain the most accurate readings.

Upon taking the Simplife out of its box, you’ll notice its lightweight. You’ll also notice its ergonomic design, which may not seem like a big deal, but proves to be handy when attempting to hold onto a thermometer and keep a sick child calm and still.

It features an extra-grip surface. For night readings, the thermometer includes a powerful backlight that makes reading the LCD display easy – even in low light conditions. On detecting the fever, the display turns red, and the thermometer beeps

This thermometer has been tested in clinical settings where its accuracy has been ensured. It has been deemed suitable for both professional and at-home use.

It’s important to note here, though, that a buildup of oil or sweat on the head of the device can cause inaccuracies and somewhat of a poor reputation for non-contact thermometers. The device head and the probe for ear readings should be kept clean and sterilized between each use.

This handy thermometer is also great for tracking sickness by way of temperature.

To further solidify readings, it’s a good idea to switch to the in-ear method after taking the forehead temperature and getting a reading of a fever. Taking both temperatures will ensure an accurate reading. This being said since it’s often hard to get a child to hold still when awake, try to take a sleeping child’s temperature with the forehead reader when they are asleep.

To make sure they stay asleep, the beeps that accompany readings can be turned off and then back on. The backlight isn’t too bright, either, offering a good amount of dusky light that doesn’t disrupt the sleep of anyone within the immediate area.

Pros

  • Lightweight and easy to grasp.
  • Red lights indicate the presence of a fever.
  • Easy-to-read LCD display and backlight for easy nighttime reading.
  • Sound indicators that can turn on and off.
  • Can be used on the forehead or in the ear, depending on the person using it.

Cons

  • No replacement probe covers.
  • Sensitive to ear wax and oil buildup, requiring frequent cleaning.

Conclusion:

Generally speaking, it’s a pretty solid device. It’s both useful and easy to use, working for the entire family. It comes at a moderate price point that makes it accessible to families on any budget and provides great value for the price.

4. Kinsa QuickCare – With Kinsa Mobile App

Kinsa Smart Thermometer for Fever - Digital Medical Baby, Kid and Adult Termometro - Accurate, Fast, FDA Cleared Thermometer for Oral, Armpit or Rectal Temperature Reading - QuickCare The Kinsa QuickCare is a highly versatile, compact thermometer that boasts wireless capabilities and is great for the whole family.

Its readings are accurate and quick, while its reliability is raved about by users all over the world.

The best thing is that it comes with a dedicated mobile app which upon installation unlocks quite a number of smart features.

Specifications
  • Smartphone app connectivity.
  • Multi-purpose use.
  • Readings in under 10 seconds.
  • Suitable for all age groups.
  • Readings in Fahrenheit and Celcius.

Our In-Depth Review:

One of the first things we noticed about this ordinary-looking thermometer was that it has its own app. That’s right – this thermometer’s creators have gone as far as to create an app to use with the device.

This app, called the Kinsa app, connects to a variety of wireless devices such as iPhones and Androids by way of Bluetooth. It works with most major brands, which is a bonus.

The app, when used correctly, is able to give suggestions on how to feel better using your age, temperature, and symptoms, as well as to tell you when you should call a doctor. When a child’s temperature is being taken, the app even offers a fun bubble-popping game that keeps them still while the thermometer does its work.

The use of this thermometer is flexible, as it can be used orally, rectally, or to take underarm temperatures. The tip, called the ‘comfort tip’, is compatible with standard probe covers and is able to get an accurate reading within as few as 8 seconds.

The thermometer has been cleared by the FDA and includes easy-to-follow instructions and a travel case. It’s also recommended by pediatricians all over the world as being one of the most reliable thermometers on the market, which, in our opinion, is pretty accurate as it gave us the same reading out of each ear.

Moving onto user experience, the thermometer has a seemingly simple setup and design, but it works surprisingly well, seeing as most smartphone-based medical devices have a variety of major flaws.

The power button is large and easy to find in low light conditions, however, the battery life is a bit of a pain due to the fact that the thermometer requires coin-style batteries instead of basic, everyday batteries. Once the device is connected to the app, it automatically starts to take a reading and after it’s done, it will shut off within 10 seconds, making it easy to conserve both the battery of your phone and the battery of the thermometer.

You could also opt to turn it off manually. Want to look back at the last temperature reading? No problem. Previous readings are stored on the device and you have the option to upload readings onto the app at a later date, which is very helpful.

Cleaning is also pretty easy. The probe can be cleaned using alcohol wipes and/or a damp cloth. Although, it’s important to note that the thermometer probe is water-resistant but not totally waterproof and shouldn’t be submerged in water.

In addition, it’s not necessary to use a probe cover if you don’t want to, so long as the probe is cleaned regularly and after each use – especially after rectal use.

One minor downfall of this device is that when using the probe in the ear, you have to push the probe in quite far, which can cause pain and discomfort for someone with an ear infection or headache.

Pros

  • Multiple ways it can be used.
  • It comes with an easy-to-use smartphone app.
  • Automatic shut-off.
  • Flexible comfort tip.

Cons

  • The probe must be inserted quite far into the ear canal for ear readings.

Conclusion:

The way that these thermometer works is truly a lifesaver. Its versatility is a major bonus, despite being one of the factors that commonly earns thermometers bad reviews. As we mentioned, though, the ear probe has to be pushed in quite away. This generally isn’t a big deal but it can be in the right scenario, so it may be best to avoid this thermometer if your child or family member is prone to problems with their ears. Otherwise, this thermometer is a fantastic family-friendly option.

5. QQCute Thermometer – With Results in 1 Second

QQCute Baby Forehead Thermometer with Ear Function More Accurate Digital Infrared Medical Fever Body Basal Thermometers Suitable for Infant Kid Adult The QQCute thermometer is a handy, reliable device that parents all around the world swear by.

It comes with a set of features that are both useful and luxurious, as well as boasts an easy-to-use design.

The thermometer is capable of delivering the results in just 1 second with a press of a button. We think this is a really great feature.

Specifications
  • Fever alarm technology.
  • Memory recall.
  • LCD display and backlight.
  • Automatic shut-off.

Our In-Depth Review:

Upon opening the box, we were surprised to see that this thermometer isn’t flashy or overly stylish as we assumed it would be based on its great reviews. Instead, we unboxed a classic, clean-looking device that sports a blue tip and buttons. One bonus if you do not like blue, though, is that it’s available in a number of different colors.

Moving onto what really matters, we’re pleased to report that this thermometer seems to live up to its hype. The first thing we noticed was its auto shut-off feature, which is programmed to turn the device off after it’s been on and unused for longer than 30 seconds.

This handy feature preserves its battery life and improves overall long-term performance.

It has four different modes of use: ear, forehead, ambient, and object. In esr mode, the ear probe is inserted into the ear canal, while in forehead mode, the sensing end of the device is placed by the child’s forehead to read the temperature. Object mode is used for taking the temperature of objects such as milk and bathwater.

Many buyers have praised this thermometer for its distinctive LED colors and LCD screen complete with large, easy-to-read numbers. Its backlight and mute function are two more popular features, as they help prevent the waking of a sleeping child.

When there is a fever present, though, the thermometer sends out a fever alarm- a series of loud, distinctive beep patterns that alert parents and/or caregivers of the problem. Its screen will also turn red, leaving no chance of a fever going unnoticed.

To monitor the health of family members, the thermometer has the ability to store 20 previous readings in its internal memory.

In terms of accuracy, the QQCute is one of the better models, offering a reading that only differentiates from other models by less than half an increment. Due to this, users can toss the old thermometer and trust that QQCute will deliver highly accurate, reliable results. We did test this theory, though, and we found this particular claim to be true.

The thermometer’s readings matched other devices almost perfectly. Its results can be taken in either Fahrenheit or Celsius, and readings are given within just a few short seconds.

Here, it’s important to note that a small number of customers have had readings as far off as 2 or 3 degrees when using this thermometer. In all cases, though, the thermometer had a software problem and was sent in for repairs. If your QQCute gives off vastly different readings, consider sending it in to be fixed.

For the on-the-go, this thermometer is ideal. It can be quickly packed into suitcases, handbags, or backpacks for on-the-go medical emergencies. It weighs only 10.4 ounces, making it light and virtually weightless. In addition, it boasts a compact design that takes up a small amount of room.

To make travel safe for the device, it comes with a lightweight material carrying bag that will protect its screen from getting scratched.

Pros

  • Takes readings in Fahrenheit and Celsius.
  • Lightweight.
  • Versatile.
  • Instant results in 1 second.

Cons

  • Some models seem to be 1 or 2 degrees off.

Conclusion:

Overall, the QQCute baby is a smart choice for anyone needing to get an accurate temperature reading with minor trouble. Its fever detection technology and versatile methods of use make it a great option for families with members of all ages.

6. URWILL Thermometer – With Object Mode

Baby Thermometer, URWILL Medical Forehead and Ear Thermometer, Infrared Digital Temporal Thermometer for Fever, Clinical Instant Thermometer Suitable for Baby, Infant, Toddler and Adults Designed with the health and wellness of families in mind, the URWILL forehead and ear thermometer is a reliable choice that has ranked highly among family units since its release.

It offers quick, digital readings, a variety of modes of use, and a reputation for accuracy.

Along with the body temperature, the thermometer can also measure the temperature of the object and the room.

Specifications
  • Three easy-to-use modes of use.
  • Backlight LCD screen.
  • Fever alert technology.
  • Reading recall system.

Our In-Depth Review:

What first sparked our interest in the URWILL thermometer was its claims to be clinically tested. The thermometer was tested both in the factory and in real-world situations with diligence before it was released to the public – a fact that we appreciated. This being said, going into our first use, we were expecting excellence. We weren’t disappointed.

Taking it out of the box, we found a pretty standard-looking thermometer with a large display area and two function buttons; the first turned the thermometer on and the second sported the word “Mem”, which stands for memory. The shape of thermometer is a pretty standard shape but is easy to grasp and feels good in the hand.

The thermometer boasts three highly-efficient modes of use; object, forehead, and ear. Both forehead and ear modes are used to take the temperature of the body. Ear mode accomplishes this by the attachment of an in-ear probe which is then inserted into the opening of the ear canal.

Forehead mode is more modern in the way it is done, simply requiring the flat surface at the end of the thermometer to be placed in close proximity to the forehead for a non-contact reading. Object mode is used to gauge the temperature of objects including food, milk, and water for bathing. We tried each of these methods, finding them all to be easy to use.

The mode of us didn’t affect the speed of the reading, each one being given within a matter of one second – crazy, right? That’s not even long enough for a sick child to start to complain about having their temperature taken. The thermometer gives you the option to decide between Fahrenheit and Celsius so you can choose whichever you’re more used to using and understand better.

After a reading has been taken, the results pop up on the large backlight LCD display screen. The device is smart enough to recognize a fever, sending off an “alarm” – a specific beep- when one is detected. When this happens, the screen will also turn red.

To save power and reduce the frequency at which you have to change the device’s batteries, the thermometer shuts down automatically after a certain amount of time. Hence you do have to change batteries, the device uses standard AA batteries that can be found at a variety of stores.

Another feature of this device is the memory recall system. This highly advanced system allows the thermometer to store up to 20 previous temperature readings, making it easy to look back on readings and monitor illness more closely. This is what the previously mentioned “Mem” button is for. This button is also what’s used to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Pros

  • Stores up to 20 previous readings.
  • Multi-use.
  • A large LCD display with a backlight.
  • Auto shut-off feature.

Cons

  • The forehead scan can be 1 degree different than the ear scan.

Conclusion:

All in all, there are no major cons to this thermometer. It’s a solid device that is known for its reliability and ease of use. We found it to be pretty accurate, as well, which is a plus. We’d recommend it for families with small children as its non-contact forehead and object mode are geared toward the young.

7. Puruizt Thermometer – With Automatic Display of Memories

PURUIZT Non-Contact Forehead Infrared Thermometer No Touch Digital Fever Thermometer for Adults Kids Baby Body Surface Temperature Measurement,Accurate Instant Reading with LCD Display and Fever Alarm The PURUIZT thermometer is built to last.

Made of high-quality materials and featuring modern technology, it has a shelf life that competes with high-end models.

Its readings are quick and accurate, and its non-contact method of use is ideal for use on children.

Specifications
  • Fever alert system.
  • Various modes of use.
  • Automatic memory display.
  • 30 readings call.

Our In-Depth Review:

The first thing we noticed about this thermometer was the very particular way that it requires users to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius. While many devices require the simple push of a button, the PURUIZT requires the device to first be turned off and then the scan button to be held down for 8 seconds.

This isn’t a big deal, but we found it to be slightly inconvenient when compared to other thermometers. Regardless, it’s great that the thermometer offers both types of readings.

In terms of appearance, the PURUIZT is a basic thermometer with no fancy colors or patterns. Although, its buttons are laid out in a way that is different than most models, with both buttons on the bottom of the display screen instead of one on top and one on the bottom.

Its coloration is simple, with white being the main color, and its body was thick enough to be gripped easily but not so big as to be hard to hold onto.

Moving into functionality, the thermometer worked pretty well, giving us no major issues. Its manufacturer claims that it has an accuracy of 98% so we had to put this to the test. We tried each of the available modes – body and object-, finding that, on average, the thermometer gave pretty accurate readings.

There were no large differences between one mode and the other. The readings took a few seconds, the thermometer emitting a long beep after the completion of each one.

According to the box, object mode can be used to test the surface temperature of milk or baby’s bath water, as well as the temperature in any given room. When testing this, we made a point to ensure that the thermometer did not accidentally fall in or com in contact with the water or liquids we were getting readings from, as the device is not waterproof.

When the thermometer detects a fever, it sets off a series of beeps. It will also turn its screen red as an indication of the high temperature. If there is no fever, the screen will stay green.

To get an accurate reading with every use, the manufacturer recommends ensuring that the area being read is clean and dry. The presence of sweat, dirt, dust, or water can cause the resulting readings to be inaccurate.

For cleaning, the device can be wiped with antibacterial wipes and/or a damp cloth. It should not be submerged in water or left in areas of high humidity. Also, before taking a reading, you should climatize your device. This means that you should leave the device in the room where the reading will take place for at least 30 minutes prior.

Pros

  • Red backlit display.
  • Object temperature management.
  • Quick readings.
  • Large display.

Cons

  • Finicky switching between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Conclusion:

If you don’t mind waiting a few extra seconds to switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius and vice versa, this thermometer is a good addition to your home medical kit. It’s a lightweight, reliable option that runs off of run-of-the-mill batteries and has an incredibly long lifespan. In addition, its affordable price tag is another big bonus.

8. AKID Thermometer – With 4 Modes

AKID Medical Thermometer for Fever, Instant Accurate Reading Ear and Forehead Thermometer for Baby Kids and Adults 4 Modes Digital Infrared Thermometer Professional Certification The AKID medical thermometer is a colorful choice for any household.

Not only does it boast a unique appearance, but it also offers quick and accurate readings at a fraction of the typical price of infrared thermometers.

Similar to a few other thermometers, this one is also capable of measuring the temperature of the objects and the ambiance.

Specifications
  • LED warning lights.
  • Memory recall technology.
  • 3 modes.
  • LCD backlight screen.

Our In-Depth Review:

The AKID thermometer has been clinically tested and approved, which is one of the many things that, in combination with good reviews, drew us to this specific model.

However, our first opinion was based mostly on appearance. When we unboxed the thermometer, we were shocked to find that the device is a baby pink color, which is something you don’t see often in thermometers. Aside from this, though, nothing really stood out appearance-wise.

We weren’t disappointed, though, trusting that the thermometer would be as good as the reviews hyped it up to be. So, continuing our evaluation, we got to use the device. It features an option that allows users to easily toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius with the flick of a small switch underneath the device’s battery cover. It also has four modes that can be used: ear, forehead, object, and room.

Ear and forehead are obviously used to take the body’s temperature, forehead without having to insert any probes into the ear, while object and room mode is a bit more unique. In object mode, you can take the surface temperature of an object such as warm milk, juice, or bath water.

In-room mode, you’re able to get accurate temperature readings of the room you’re in to ensure the comfort of your loved one while they are ill. Here, we should mention that in object mode, the thermometer should be kept 1-5cm away from the object at hand. Any closer than this and the accuracy of the reading may be compromised.

In addition to its various modes of use, the thermometer also features a handful of luxury features. These include the ever-so-helpful color-changing LED lights that change when a fever is detected and the LCD screen with a backlight that makes it possible to read the temperature findings in the dark.

The LEDs will flash green for a temperature that is within the normal range and red for a temperature that is too high and considered to be a fever. It also uses a memory recall system that can store the results of up to 35 previous readings. These stored readings can be looked back on in order to monitor temperatures and overall health.

The instructions included with the device are concise and easy to read. They are written in simple English that both native and non-native speakers can understand and make sense of. They also make use of short steps to make setting up and using the thermometer a breeze.

Unlike some devices that are water-resistant, the AKID is not. It is sensitive to both water and moisture and as such, should be kept out of humid areas and away from moisture. This means that cleaning should be done only with a damp cloth or antibacterial wipes that won’t leave excess moisture on the device.

Pros

  • The LCD screen with backlight for night reading.
  • Memory recalls can hold 35 readings.
  • Unique color.
  • LED temperature indicators.

Cons

  • Not water-resistant.

Conclusion:

At the end of the day, this thermometer offers a good value for its asking price. Customers are impressed with its accuracy and overall technological design, and it has been approved as safe for use as well as reliable by credible sources. We don’t hesitate to recommend this thermometer to any family who could find it useful. In fact, it’s one of our top choices.

Boasting a clean, white appearance, this thermometer looks highly professional at first glance. This being said, its lack of buttons and controls almost makes it look as if it lacks useful qualities. However, this isn’t true as we found out when we started testing it. As it turns out, it’s one main button is able to control all of the thermometer’s various functions.

The thermometer can be used in two different ways: ear and forehead. Ear mode, as its name suggests, involves attaching a probe to the end of the thermometer and inserting the probe slightly into the ear canal. In other words, it’s one of the traditional methods of taking temperatures.

Forehead mode is where infrared technology comes in; users simply place the surface of the thermometer on the forehead to read the body’s temperature. When using forehead mode, the skin should be clean and free of oils, sweat, and moisture in order to get an accurate reading.

In addition to the two main modes of use, the Caroune thermometer also offers a silent mode. This mode can be activated to prevent the device from emitting any sounds that may wake a sleeping child or family member, or that users might find annoying.

Going along with this, the screen of this thermometer has a soft backlight that is bright enough to light up the screen but not bright enough to be disruptive to anyone in the room – especially those who may be asleep.

The accuracy of the device was pretty on point. It gave the same readings as a number of other devices and didn’t give different readings in each ear, which is common among many brands of thermometers.

The reading difference between the forehead and ear modes had a surprisingly small value; they gave results that were less than one degree different from one another. When a fever is detected, the device sounds a fever alarm that serves as an indicator.

It takes a matter of around 2 seconds to get an accurate reading, which is a time frame we can appreciate.

One thing we found a bit disappointing with this model, though, is the color contrast between the digital numbers and the rest of the device. At night, when the backlight is on, the readings are easy to see.

During the day when you’re more likely to be using natural light or light from a lamp or light bulb, however, they become kind of hard to read. This is because the numbers are white and so is the body of the device. If you have eyesight problems, you may struggle to make sense of the numbers.

Pros

  • Quick results.
  • Soft backlight and silent mode.
  • Reliable readings.
  • Suitable for all age groups.

Cons

  • May be hard for users with impaired vision to clearly see readings.

Conclusion:

The Caroune thermometer made it onto our list because of its incredible accuracy and simple, one-button design. Its lack of color contrast between the digital numbers and the device body is its only real downside, proving to be a challenge for those with impaired vision. For all other users, though, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. So, all in all, we’d recommend it.

10. Hobest Thermometer – With Ambient temperature Measurement

Hobest Baby Thermometer, Digital Clinical Infrared Forehead and Ear Thermometer for Toddler Infant Kids Children Adult with Fast Accurate Fever Indicator This modern thermometer is a favorite for families across the world.

It uses a state-of-the-art design and technological features that rival those of the most expensive thermometers – without the cost.

It’s a guaranteed method for getting accurate readings.

It can be used not only for recording fever but for also recording objects and room temperature.

Specifications
  • LCD backlight screen.
  • Multiple modes of use.
  • Memory recall.
  • Red light warning for fever.

Our In-Depth Review:

There are a number of features that make this device stand out from traditional thermometers. For one, it’s an infrared thermometer and can be used without making contact with the body. Secondly, unlike many models of thermometers, it uses basic batteries to operate.

The third thing is its price, which is truly a bargain when you consider the high-tech technology and advanced features that the thermometer has.

What are these features? To start, the thermometer boasts multiple, highly-reliable modes of use. It offers four unique modes that make it easy to take the temperature of almost anything – including milk and bath water, as one of its modes is the “milk” mode, which can be used to take the temperature of liquids.

It also has a home, ear, and forehead mode, with “home” having the ability to take the temperature of the air in a room. Ear mode requires an attachment to be clicked onto the end of the device, but this is super simple to do.

It also offers accurate readings within just a few seconds, regardless of which mode of use is being used. The readings given within this short time frame are nothing short of accurate, matching up to the readings of other, more expensive, devices. When the reading has been taken, its specs will show up on the large LCD display screen.

If you can’t read them due to the darkness of the room, there is an option to activate the device’s backlight. If a fever is detected during a reading, the backlight will turn red and a series of short beeps will sound as indicators. However, to avoid waking a sleeping child or family member, the beeps can be temporarily disabled.

After reading, the device will automatically shut off after 30 seconds if it is left unused and isn’t powered off manually before this time limit. It will also shut off if it is turned on and then not used at all.

Although this can be a bit of a pain when trying to wrangle an unwilling patient, it proves to be highly beneficial in the way that it saves battery life. For us, this was the case, but it was a minor flaw that didn’t hinder our experience.

Another useful feature is the memory recall system within the device. With this handy system, the device will store the findings of 20 previous readings. This makes it easy to keep an eye on the health of a loved one through close monitoring. The thermometer can be used in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, with the “Mem” button giving you an easy way to switch from one to the other.

As thermometers generally aren’t the most fancy-looking gadgets within the home, this one was no exception. It has a simple design with two main buttons and features a classic medical color scheme: blue and white.

Pros

  • Handy memory recall system.
  • Classic style.
  • Numerous modes of use.
  • LCD screen with large numbers.

Cons

  • Some users report inaccurate readings.

Conclusion:

Despite the mixed reviews of this thermometer, we didn’t have any problems with it. In fact, we found it to be easy to use and relatively reliable. The ability to use the device to scan room temperatures is something we haven’t seen before and, overall, we’d recommend this thermometer to almost anyone.

Thermometer for Babies – Buyer’s Guide

What is a baby thermometer?

Baby with a thermometerA baby thermometer is a device used to measure the temperature of your baby and give out the reading on a digital display letting you know if your baby has a fever or not.

Modern-day thermometers are not just fast and accurate but are also very easy to read with digital displays integrated into them.

Also, they come in various types which allows you to measure the temperature in various ways.

The most accurate type of baby thermometer is the rectal thermometer.

How is a baby thermometer different from an adult thermometer?

If we talk about the other types apart from the rectal ones then there is not a lot of difference between any of them.

All the types work in the same way and could be used on both adults and babies, except the rectal thermometers.

The rectal thermometer involves putting the probe of the thermometer into the rectum up to 1/2 inch. Don’t push the thermometer if it starts getting hard to insert.

The baby rectal thermometers come in a smaller size as compared to the adult ones.

Benefits of using a baby thermometer

Measuring temperature to a baby with thermometerThermometers have been in the household for quite a time now and ever since digital thermometers were introduced in the market, more people started to keep the thermometers in their homes.

And now since most of the thermometers in the market are infrared sensors, people have started asking how are they better.

Well, here are a few of the benefits of the very latest digital baby thermometers.

Accurate and Fast

Literally, the digital thermometer is so fast that is only a matter of fact when the accurate reading is displayed on the screen.

You do not want you, baby, to suffer the pain while the slow reading thermometer does its job.

The traditional thermometers took a lot of time to gather all the data which ultimately took them a long time to display the results.

Easy to Read

With the glass thermometers, it was really hard to read the temperature, atleast for normal people.

Digital infrared thermometers, on the other hand, come with a fixed display on the top that shows the reading, which makes it possible for almost anyone to read the temperature.

Convenient

You do not have to go out to the hospital or call your doctor just to check if your baby has a fever or not. All you have to do is take out the thermometer from your closet and get the accurate reading, and then see if there is any need to take the baby to the doctor or things that could be handled at home itself.

No-touch Infrared thermometers

Infrared thermometers are very helpful when recording the temperature of a sleeping baby.

With the normal thermometer, you have to keep it under the arm or below the tongue which might wake up a sleeping baby, but since the infrared thermometers require no touch with the body, means no disturbance is caused to the baby.

What temperature is right for your baby

Pediatrician examining temperature of babySince the babies could not tell you when they are experiencing a fever, it’s your job to look out for them and measure their temperature when you find something suspicious.

But at what temperature should you take them to the doctor?

For babies younger than 3 months, you should call a doctor if the thermometer reading is above 100.4 degrees F.

For babies who are older than 3 months, you should call a doctor if the reading shows a temperature higher than 101 degrees F.

Types of thermometers

Although we have mainly focused on the digital infrared baby thermometer, we wanted to make you aware of all the types of thermometers available in the market.

Rectal thermometer

Mother measures fever with her babyRectal thermometers are said to be the most accurate thermometers and are widely recommended by doctors.

They offer true body temperature reading with no guesswork left behind.

Although the other thermometers are also almost accurate, you need to be aware of the true temperature when it comes to babies.

Both the digital and the glass thermometers could be used as rectal thermometers.

How to use a rectal thermometer

  • Take out the thermometer from the box or the stand.
  • Clean the probe with soap and rinse it well with cool water.
  • Place some lubricating jelly on the probe.
  • Place your baby on his stomach on your lap or on a firm bed.
  • Gently slide the lubricated probe into the rectum for about a half-inch. Do not put pressure if its hard to insert.
  • Hold the thermometer until the notification beef for the recording comes up.
  • Keep a record of the temperature if you have been advised to do that by the doctor.

Glass thermometer

Hand holding a thermometer with high temperature on blur crying baby background. We are pretty sure everyone remembers the Glass thermometers. A thermometer that Doctors used to put under our arms or below the tongue, and then read the temperature by looking at the glass.

Glass thermometers have evolved a lot since then. Not in the terms of how they operate, but in terms of how they are built.

Previous gen glass thermometers used mercury for measuring the temperature. The silver metal end of the thermometer used to have liquid mercury in it which gets hotter after getting in contact with the body temperature and the reading on the thermometer rises.

However since mercury was a very dangerous substance to use, it has now been replaced with non-toxic alcohol, and the new glass thermometers are referred to as spirit thermometers.

How to use a glass thermometer

  • Take the thermometer in your hand.
  • Clean the thermometer with the alcohol or spirit o soap and rinse with clean cool water.
  • Hold the thermometer by the opposite end. You should be able to see a red line inside the thermometer. This line should be below 96 degrees. If the line reads above 96 degrees, you would need to shake the thermometer a bit until the line reaches below 96 degrees. Hold the thermometer tightly while shaking so that it doesn’t fall and break.
  • Now just place the probe below the tongue or under the armpit and keep it in a steady position for about 3 minutes.
  • Now remove the thermometer without touching the metal end and hold it at eye level.
  • Look at the position of the red line to determine the temperature of the body. Each long mark on the thermometer determines one degree while the short mark determines 0.2 degrees.

Digital thermometer

Digital thermometers are the most popular type of thermometers in the market that are super easy to operate and read.

On the body of the thermometer somewhere you would be able to see a small LCD that shows the temperature reading.

Digital readouts are available in both the sensor thermometer and the one that comes with the metal probe.

Forehead thermometer

The forehead thermometer or Temporal Artery thermometer uses infrared technology to measure the temperature of body through the temporal artery in the forehead.

These types of thermometers are quite fast, you just have to move the sensor across the head of your kind and the temperature would be recorded.

Ear thermometer

Mother takes temperature for baby boy with ear thermometer on bed at home.Ear thermometers are not much different as compared to forehead thermometers. You just have to put it inside the ear and the thermometer measures the temperature from inside the baby’s ear canal.

But these types of thermometers are not the most accurate ones.

Some of the reasons for the inaccuracy are:

  • Presence of ear wax.
  • There could be an ear infection that could cause inaccuracy.
  • Small or curved ear canals.

Factors to consider when buying a baby thermometer

AccuracyConsistencySpeedEasy to read
Accuracy should be the first thing that you should focus on, Doesn’t matter how advanced or pretty looking a thermometer is, if the readings on it are not accurate, it is of no use.
If your thermometer shows a different reading on every test then that would not be called a consistent temperature.

You would want your thermometer to give you the same accurate reading not only the first time but every single time.

Most modern-day thermometers can record the temperature and give you the reading in under 10 seconds. So if the thermometer you are going with comes with that speed, you are fine.
The readings should be easy to read, and that is why we highly recommend everyone go with the digital baby thermometer.

Faqs related to the thermometer for babies
